Time management is literally the one thing that will make or break your career in real estate. Someone recently said to me that they don’t know how I find the time to do everything I’m doing. AND wow that was really surprising because I think I’m not doing nearly enough. I always think I should be farther along or be able to do more in a day. I look at others who seem to have everything together and think HOW do they do it?! Well maybe I am doing some things right and i just don’t give myself credit for them. Here’s one time management hack that will change your life if you commit to it!
We all think others are way more productive or together than they probably actually are. However there are people who run HUGE businesses and you have to wonder, how are they managing to fit all that into their day. And that all comes down to how they schedule their day and what they allow into it. I am not a particularly disciplined person, so I’ve had to find a time management hack to keep me on track. Time blocking is simple hack to make your life more productive. By blocking out a schedule, you avoid running the risk of having other people (clients, co-op agents, title companies, etc) schedule your life for you. This method of scheduling means you are always working on someone else’s time not your own.
Time Blocking for real estate
This article from The One Thing site outlines a simple model for time blocking and batching. What I like about this idea is that it’s broken into 25 minutes. Just enough time to get something accomplished but not so long that you’ll start to drift off and lose focus (or is that just me). Often I try to block a full 3 hours of lead generation and distractions inevitably arise. By blocking smaller chunks of time I can categorize them into different types of leads. This also give you little small wins every 25 minutes when you get through that batch of people and move on to the next!
I weekly review my schedule and re-block the week. Every week may look a little different so Saturday morning allows me to review what’s going to get in the way. Then I simply adjust to be sure important activities get done. I leave time for client and customer appointments in the afternoons and make sure then those are the times that I offer when an appointment opportunity arises!
How do you set your schedule?
