This week’s episode we talk about determining our “One Thing”. It is an elusive idea in real estate. As a real estate agent we can feel like we are being pulled in a million directions by a million people. Sometimes it feels like everything is important and urgent. After selling real estate for 18 years I have learned a few things:
Everything is NOT urgent and important
What you Focus on Expands, so why not focus on the one thing that can make you most successful!
I am not a disciplined person! I have no will power and can easily get off track working on other people’s “one things”. That means I have to set up road blocks for other people and distractions in order to achieve my goals.
My “one thing” seems to change as my role changes. As a new single agent the answer to what is your one thing is simple. Your one thing is lead generation…although it seems impossible to know at that moment in time. As you grow a team your role changes and your priorities shift. For example, if you are no longer in the sales part of your business, your one thing may be recruiting other talented team members. Or it might be training others to get them into production.
To determine your the one thing in your current role and where you are in your real estate career, I highly recommend reading the book “The One Thing”. Get really narrow with your focus and determine what truly matters most.
I find it helps to work through the focusing question: “What’s the ONE Thing I can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”
Whenever I’m lost or feel off track, I revisit the question and see if the answer is still the same. Once I know my priority, I use 4-1-1 goal setting tool to break it down over the months and weeks. This helps further narrow the focus to “What’s the ONE Thing I can do TODAY such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”. Then go after it!
