Real Estate Production Goals That Guide Your Week

A lot of real estate agents do not have a production goal.

They have a general hope that this year will be better than last year. They want more closings, more money, more consistency, maybe fewer months where they are quietly wondering what happened to the business they thought they were building. That is understandable. It is also hard to make decisions from.

We mentioned the $100,000 goal on the podcast. It is a number agents say all the time, usually because it sounds like the kind of goal a real estate agent should have. But $100,000 is not automatically the right number for you. Neither is $250,000. A production goal needs a reason behind it. Otherwise, it is just something you write down in January and feel bad about in October.

Start with the life you are trying to support. What do you need to bring home? What does it cost to run your business? What is coming out for your split, taxes, marketing, MLS fees, licensing, and the million small things nobody warns you about when you get licensed? Now you have something to work from. From there, look at the business in front of you. What is your average commission after your split? How many transactions would it take to reach the income you need? If that number is twelve deals, you can start asking better questions. Where do those twelve deals usually come from? How many people are in your database? How many appointments are you creating? What are you doing every week that could reasonably lead to twelve closings?

You do not need to know every answer before you set the goal. You do need to be honest about whether your current habits have any relationship to it.

This is where I see agents get stuck. They want the result, but they never turn it into something they can work on. They pick a number because it feels motivating, then spend the year reacting to whatever shows up. A production goal should help you decide what belongs on your calendar and what does not.

It also gives you a way to adjust without making everything personal. Maybe you run the math and realize your original number would require more business than you can handle right now. Fine. Maybe you realize you have been aiming low because you are still operating like the agent you were two years ago. Also fine. The point is to know.

Your goal does not need to impress your broker, your office, or Instagram. It needs to be useful when you are deciding how to spend next Tuesday.

FAQ section: Real Estate Production Goals

How do real estate agents set a production goal?

Start with the income you need, your business expenses, commission split, and average commission. Then work backward to determine the number of transactions your business needs to produce.

Why do real estate agents need a production goal?

A production goal turns a general hope for more business into a number you can plan around. It helps agents decide which lead-generation activities, appointments, and follow-up habits belong on their calendar.
