Don’t Delete Someone Just Because They Have an Agent: real estate database follow-up

One of my very first buyers eventually told me that her daughter had gotten her real estate license.

It would’ve been easy to remove her from my database. She had an agent in the family now, so why bother staying in touch?

But I didn’t remove her.

Not because I was trying to compete with her daughter. I respected that relationship. I just didn’t assume that one change meant the relationship I’d built with my client no longer mattered. Her daughter eventually left the business. Then, last year, that past client sent me a referral that closed.

This happens more often than agents realize. People say they already have an agent, and we immediately decide they’ll never work with us. But having an agent today doesn’t mean they’ll have that same agent three years from now.

Agents leave the business. They move away. They change careers. Sometimes they just stop staying in touch.

That doesn’t mean you should aggressively follow up with someone who has another agent. You shouldn’t. Respect the relationship and make a note in your database.

But unless they’ve asked you to stop contacting them, you don’t have to disappear either.

Keep them on your long-term communication plan. Send useful information. Check in occasionally. Continue being someone they know and remember. Real estate database follow-up is an important part of my business.

Someone’s situation today isn’t necessarily their situation forever.

Don’t make a permanent decision about a relationship based on a temporary circumstance.
